Celebrating the Elders” wasa function held by the High Commission of India on 15th September, 2018 in Hotel Hilton, where 38 Elderly Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) between the ages of 105-90 years were felicitated by Heads of Prominent Socio-Cultural-Religious Organizations. The Elders were garlanded with a Khadi Angavastram (shawl) specially made for this occasion as well as presented with a personalised letter from India’s Minister of External Affairs. Celebrating The Elders is a pioneering initiative by the High Commission of India, inspired by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi’s affection towards elders and his active outreach to the Indian Diaspora abroad. It was implemented under the supervision of Hon’ble External Affairs Minister of India, Smt. Sushma Swaraj, whose penchant for salvaging the needy, maintaining warm public relations are widely known. The High Commission of India led by Shri Bishwadip Dey embarked on the initiative to reach out to the elderly Persons of Indian Origin, above the age of 90 years. This initiative is to seek blessings from the elders and also to express our gratitude and thanks for maintaining and promoting Indianness in the Caribbean So far, High Commissioner and officials have met over 55 persons, and spent time with them at their residence. Among them, there are 13 persons who are above the age of 100 years. The felicitation ceremony also included speeches by leaders of the Socio-Cultural-Religious organisations viz Mr. Satnarine Maharaj, Secretary General of Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha, Reverend Daniel Teeluksingh Presbyterian Minister, Imam Sharaz Ali of Nur Islam Masjid and Mr. Deoroop Teemal of National Council of India Culture, along with Dance performances by three children. The Elderly PIOs, their family members and the civil society at large have applauded the High Commission’s endeavour.
