HC’s Remarks at the Inauguration of Film Festival

It is indeed a matter of pleasure for us to have you all at the inaugural movie screening of the Indian Film Festival. We are starting with screening of the epic movie of Padmavat today. There will be screening of several movies in the course of the next one month at MovieTown in Sand Fernando and Port of Spain. 

We are aware that Indian movies are very popular among people of T&T and several movies are screened on the same day as in India. The idea is to promote the Indian cinema among the audience, who generally remain away from the movies and to expose them to this important aspect of art and culture.  

It is said that Cinema is the reflection of the prevailing circumstances and situation of any society. It is true in the case of Indian Cinema – if you watch a movie of 1950s or 1960s – and if you watch a movie of 1990s or of 2010s – there is a visible difference of those respective times. 

History of Indian Cinema – long long – only source of entertainment in those times. First full length Indian Feature Flim Raja Harishchandra screened as early as 1913. Alam Ara – the first movie with sound screened in 1931 – recently the anniversary on March 14 was celebrated – 95 years ago. Technology has made a big difference to cinema.  

For decades, Indian Cinema has been the mirror of our national spirit. From the tears of 'Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon' to the fiery dialogue of 'Border', from the grit of 'Uri' to the emotional depth of 'Shershaah', cinema has always honored the bravery of our land. There are different flavours of cinema – from action to romance to thriller to horror – several experiments have been made.

What makes Indian Cinema unique? It is the spectacular blend of emotion, drama, and, of course, the essential song-and-dance numbers that turn movies into celebrations. It is a medium that has skillfully captured the essence of Indian tradition, while simultaneously adapting to modern, globalized, and fast-paced narratives. 

Not just Hindi Cinema – or bollywood – there is enough progress in other regional cinemas in India – whether it is Telugu or Tamil or Bengali or Marathi – a number award winning movies have been made in all these years 

For outside world, the Cinema serves as a vital tool of cultural diplomacy, acting as a bridge between India and our friendly countries. It showcases our vibrant culture, diverse festivals, and rich heritage, fostering a deeper understanding of India among global audiences. 

This film festival is a tribute to all the ancestors for making such a perilous journey 180 years ago and subsequently for a better future for their generations – 

If the Film Festival receives good response, we will endeavour to have it on regular basis – therefore, kindly come in full strength – bring your friends and families-  make most of it and 

I wish to thank our colleague Mr Sagar Maitra, Mr Ajay Yadav and full team of the High Commission for coordinating this festival and making this event possible. Big hand
